2018 Wallace Stevens
poem Broadside

A limited-edition letterpress broadside is designed annually by the University of Connecticut's Design Center. The piece chosen by the Wallace Stevens Poetry Program was written by Joy Harjo whose American heritage is a vehicle for her storytelling. Referencing both her heritage and the notion of relationships became the objective.

The design team and I found it difficult to develop an interesting visual at first. Nevertheless, I proposed the use of an invisible horizon to reference the sun which is a symbol recurrent in Native American culture. The piece stresses the relationship between two adversaries, and so two suns are visualized as a disproportionate pair. The title is tilted and rests against a horizon to create a rising effect when read.

Ultimately, through further input by the design team, my design was put into production.
